Basing

2mm doesn't really have any widely accepted basing standards for any period or set of rules. Few rules authors make a ruling on this scale so players are pretty much free to decide their own.

It is mainly for this reason that I prefer to supply un-based blocks, that way you get the basing you want.

For those clients that do want me to base their figures I will need a fairly comprehensive description of what is required before I can make an accurate quote. The examples given below are only estimates and will vary depending on the size of the job, materials chosen and base texturing required.

There are many differing opinions on basing and using 2mm but they generally separate into two main schools of thought.

The Micro School

Usually one block per base on small bases so that they are easy to carry around and games can be played in a small space. Game scales are reduced in proportion to the change in base sizes.

Often uses magnetic basing for easy and safer transportation but bases over 20mm square are sometimes too flexible to mount the figures directly onto the magnetic sheet.

The Macro School

Uses a larger base, often the standard 15mm scale base size, with multiple blocks per base. This gives a good appearance of massed armies and each base can be enhanced to give a 'diorama' effect with blocks arranged to reflect real troop deployment or formation.

For these I would recommend 2mm MDF as the base material but mounting card (about 1mm thick) is usually OK.

Basing Materials Available

Mounting Card - this is about 1mm thick and suitable for bases up to about 30mm square provided they do not have any heavy texturing. Larger or more textured bases are better done with 2mm MDF.

I have recently found some artists board that is about 0.7mm thick and quite strong. It seems to resist warping reasonably well up to about 40mm square. It would be a good material to combine with magnetic sheet to make a base about 1.5mm thick. I'm using this combination to re-base my 2mm DBA blocks on 40mm wide bases.

2mm MDF - A good solid base suitable for any size but may be a bit thick for bases less than 30mm wide.

Magnetic Sheet - useful for bases not much bigger than the block on them. Can be combined with Mounting Card (makes the base about 2mm thick) for larger bases.

Some gamers like their bases to be very thin but I find that this usually ends in tears. If you have a material in mind or wish to supply base materials yourself then I am sure that we can come to some agreement.

Cost of Basing

This depends on the following :

  • The size of the base

  • The basing material

  • The arrangement of blocks on the base

  • What texturing you want on the base

In other words, until you tell me what exactly you want I can't really estimate a price
